Weekly Trending Stocks : May 22th

Markets are down for last few days into the options expiry. Sector watch; u

tilities, healthcare and consumer goods are performing well,

with services not far behind. Materials have broadly underperformed the market amid margin scares as seen by pull back in silver and other metals. Industrials and conglomerates have moderately underperformed with technology largely staying flat.

Playing the mutually exclusive advantage : $SPX $IWM

Option Delta: An underlying stock has a delta of 100 & at the money call & put's delta add up to 100. Holding an at the money covered call the reduces the delta of the position by about 50% and hence is able to hedge partially  in to a risk reduced position

But if you are confident of the markets direction, you can enhance your profits by adding a put sell to the above trade. The beauty is in the fact that it's mutually exclusive but still is able to bring the delta back to 100 since it cancels out the delta of the sold covered call.

As long as the position is active it cancels the hedge for the sold call but at expiry plays to your advantage since only one of the two contracts gets assigned. This can be played to the advantage of doubling your total profits even when reducing your position size by half. This can then be classified as risk management at its best and works very well when the option strikes are $1 apart. This strategy can be used to capture monthly return on investment of about 20-25% on a give position essentially doubling your investment capital in a period of 4-6 months.

Comparing the performance with the sage

Comparing Warren Buffet's Berkshire's performance with SPX shows a out-performance of SPX by factor of 8-10  since 1993. A look at this chart reveals this clearly

Now the next steps is comparing your own performance with the SPX.

Reviewing your own performance reveals that although this performance may have been fairly met for the last 2 years, it would require careful steps to keep consistently achieving the same for the next 20 years...

2009 ROI of 279 %  vs SPX 30 %

2010 ROI of 112% vs SPX 12.78%

Verdict is in : Finished 2010 with a 112.54% return

Finished this year with a 112%, not bad. Performance was slightly impacted by flash crash, when some positions were required to be closed.  Majority of the gains panned out during the last 3-4 months , and the negative performance in feb and may has been consistent across those months in 2009,  a more conservative approach is needed for those months. Here is how the performance chart looks, ( click thru for larger image )
Still all's well that ends well, Good Luck to all trader community for amazing 2011
